Yorkies are assertive and clever. They don't need outdoor exercise, and they usually get along well with other pets. Yorkies are too small for young children, and they'll snap if startled or teased. They like to bark and they're sometimes hard to housebreak. Yorkshire Terriers are a toy breed. Toy breeds are small companion dogs that were originally bred as pets for wealthy, cultured families. In general, toys are the perfect apartment dogs, since they require little, if any, outdoor exercise. Despite their small size, many toys are excellent watchdogs. Most get along fine with children. Some breeds are jealous of other pets. Longhaired toys need to be brushed frequently, and some breeds need to be professionally groomed every few months. Origin: Great Britain Height: 7" - 9" Weight: 3-7 pounds Coat: Straight and silky with long hair hanging down from the ears and muzzle, called a headfall. Tail is docked; ears prick up. Color: Dark steel blue with rich tan markings on the head, headfall, chest, and legs. Puppies are born black and tan, but their color changes with age. Eyes and nose are dark. Special Considerations: This is a popular breed that has been exploited. A poorly bred Yorkie is often sickly and hyperactive, so be careful. Also, avoid "teacup" Yorkies, which are smaller than normal. Teacups are often sick. |
