Saint Bernards come in two varieties: The Longhaired Saint Bernard and the Shorthaired Saint Bernard. Saint Bernards are gentle, patient, and quiet. They love the cold weather and the outdoors. Because this is a giant breed, it should be exposed to strangers at an early age. Although Saint Bernards usually like children, they're too large and clumsy for young children. They get along well with other animals, and they drool. Saint Bernards are working dogs. In general, working dogs pull sleds and carts, guard homes, and serve in the military. Because these dogs are intelligent and capable of learning almost anything, they make excellent companions. Their very size can make them difficult to control, so they must be trained by a competent professional. Most working dogs are pack dogs, so they're often aggressive with strange dogs and other pets. Origin: Switzerland Height: Males: at least 27.5"; Females: at least 25.5" Weight: 150 to 170 pounds Coat:For Longhaired Saint Bernard: Longer and slightly wavy. Brush once a week,
daily when shedding. Color: Black with a rust marking above the eyes, on the muzzle, throat, chest, legs, feet and below the tail. Also has narrow streak on each toe. A few white hairs are allowed on the chest. Eyes are brown; nose is black Special Consideration: Saint Bernards only live about 10 years. Because this breed is so big and powerful, it's not recommended for novice dog fanciers. |
