Pugs were originally pets of Buddhist monks in China. It's believed that a pug saved the life of William, Prince of Orange, by barking to announce the invasion of the Spaniards. Pugs are pleasant and stable and enjoy mild exercise. They get along well with strangers and children, although some are one-person dogs.

The Pug is a toy breed. Toy breeds are small companion dogs that were originally bred as pets for wealthy, cultured families. In general, toys are the perfect apartment dogs, since they require little, if any, outdoor exercise.

Despite their small size, many toys are excellent watchdogs. Most get along fine with children, although they'll snap if teased or startled. Some breeds are jealous of other pets. Longhaired toys need to be brushed frequently, and some breeds need to be professionally groomed every few months.

Origin: China

Height: 10" - 11"

Weight: 14 - 18 pounds

Coat: Short and soft. Tail curls over back; a double curl is most desired; ears hang down.

Colors: Apricot-fawn with a black muzzle and a black line called trace that runs along the back. Solid black and silver with black markings are less common. Eyes are dark and nose is black.

Special Consideration: Pugs have eyes that protrude, so they're susceptible to eye injuries. Their pushed-in faces make them prone to respiratory difficulties.
