Pekes are assertive, independent little dogs with lots of charm. Because they don't need much exercise, they're the perfect apartment dog. They're reserved with strangers but usually okay with other pets. Pekes are often demanding and sensitive, which makes them tough to train. They bark and wheeze. The Pekingese is a toy breed. In general, Toy breeds are small companion dogs that were originally bred as pets for wealthy, cultured families. In general, toys are the perfect apartment dogs, since they require little, if any, outdoor exercise. Despite their small size, many toys are excellent watchdogs. Most get along fine with children, although they'll snap if teased or startled. Some breeds are jealous of other pets. Longhaired toys need to be brushed frequently, and some breeds need to be professionally groomed every few months. Origin: China Height: 8" - 9" Weight: Up to 14 pounds Coat: Course with a thick ruff and feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail. Tail curves over the back; ears hang down. Colors: Red, fawn, black, white, black-and-tan, patched sable, brindle. The face is always black. Eyes and nose are also black. Special Consideration: Pekes sometimes have respiratory difficulties because of their pushed-in-faces. Pekes can't stand cold or damp weather. |
