Newfoundlands are calm and dignified dogs that make excellent companions. These strong dogs originally helped fisherman haul in their nets, so they love the water. They're usually friendly with strangers and other pets, but males are sometimes aggressive with other males. Newfoundlands move slowly and they respond well to praise. Newfoundland puppies looks like large bear cubs. Newfoundlands are working dogs. In general, working dogs pull sleds and carts, guard homes, and serve in the military. Because these dogs are intelligent and capable of learning almost anything, they make excellent companions. Their very size can make them difficult to control, so they must be trained by a competent professional. Most working dogs are pack dogs, so they're often aggressive with strange dogs and other pets. Origin: Canada Height: Males 28"; Females: 26" Weight: 130 - 150 pounds Coat: Rough and dense undercoat. Needs to be brushed daily when shedding. Tail and ears hang down. Feet are webbed. Colors: Usually solid black, or white with black patches, called Landseer. More rare are solid grey. Eyes are dark brown. Nose is black; brown on bronze dogs. |
