Golden Retrievers are possibly the greatest family dog in the world. They're happy, gentle, and outgoing. They love people, including children, and they get alone well with other pets. They're eager to please and easy to train.

Golden Retrievers are sporting dogs. In general, sporting dogs are active and require daily exercise. Because they have superior instincts in the water and woods, sporting dogs are often used for hunting. If exercised and properly trained, most sporting dogs make excellent pets. However, some of these dogs like to bark and whine a lot, so they're not suited for apartment life.

Origin: Great Britain

Height: Males: 23" - 24"; Females: 21.5" - 22.5"

Weight: 55 - 75 pounds

Coat: Over two inches long with longer hair on chest, stomach, legs, and tail.

Color: Ranges from dark red to light cream. A few white hairs on chest acceptable. Puppies' coats are lighter. Adult coat color is reached by first birthday. Eyes are brown. Nose is black.

Special Consideration: Since this breed is so popular, many Golden Retrievers have been inbred to meet the demand for puppies. Poorly bred puppies suffer from hyperactivity and health problems such as heart disease and epilepsy.
