German Shepherds are steady, confident, and extremely intelligent. Because of their keen senses and cleverness, they are now the world's leading guard, police, and military dogs. Shepherds are also used for search and rescue, bomb detection, to track missing persons and guard the blind. Shepherds need both physical and mental exercise. They can be aggressive with strange dogs and destructive if left alone too much. They need professional training.

The German Shepherd is a herding dog. Herding dogs were originally bred to control the movement of sheep and cattle. While some breeds still work the farmlands, others are used for search and rescue and narcotics detection. When kept as pets, these dogs often try to "herd" their owners by nipping at their owners' heels. If properly trained and exercised daily, herders make excellent family companions.
