Foxhounds come in two varieties: English Foxhounds and American Foxhounds. This is an extremely energetic breed that needs a great deal of exercise. Foxhounds are primarily hunting dogs and are happiest in the country with an owner who loves the outdoors. They can become destructive if confined, and they're slow learners. They are somewhat suspicious of strangers, but mix well with other pets. Foxhounds are sometimes difficult to housebreak. Foxhounds are part of the hound group. Because they're great at sniffing and exploring, hounds were originally used to trail rabbits, foxes, and other mammals. In general, most hounds are good-natured dogs that make loving companions if trained properly. Hounds are sometimes stubborn though, so training may take a while. Most hounds need rigorous physical exercise, so daily walks and runs are a must. Never let a hound off a leash unless it's in an enclosed area, because it will take off if it picks up a scent. Hounds are barkers and howlers, and they're sometimes hard to housebreak. English Foxhound Height: 21" - 25" Weight: 60 - 70 pounds Coat: Hard and short. Sometimes one inch is surgically removed from the ears to give them a rounded appearance. Color: Combination of black, white, and tan. Eyes brown or hazel. American Foxhound Height: 23" - 27" Weight: 60 - 80 pounds Coat: Hard and short. Color: Combination of black, white, and tan. Eyes brown or hazel. |
