The Chihuahua comes in two varieties: the Longhaired Chihuahua and the Shorthaired Chihuahua. Chihuahuas are tiny and alert. They're usually one-person dogs that get along well with the elderly. Chihuahuas are often jealous of other pets - except other Chihuahuas. They're reluctant to go outdoors, especially when it's cold or raining, and they're sometimes hard to housebreak. The Chihuahua is a toy breed. Toy breeds are small companions dogs that were originally bred as pets for wealthy, cultured families. Today, toys are the perfect apartment dogs, since they require little, if any, outdoor exercise. Despite their small size, many toys are excellent watchdogs. Most get along fine with children, although they'll snap if teased or startled. Some breeds are jealous of other pets. Longhaired toys need to be brushed frequently, and some breeds need to be professionally groomed every few months. Origin: Mexico Height: Approximately 5" Weight: 2 - 6 pounds Coat: Shorthaired Chihuahuas have soft, short coats; Longhaired Chihuahuas have longer hair on the ears, chest , stomach, legs, and tail. Tail stands erect; ears prick up, but the tips may droop slightly. Colors: Fawn, white, blond, black-and-tan, patched, and other colors. Eyes and nose are dark in dark-colored dogs, lighter in light-colored dogs. Special Consideration: Chihuahuas are born with a soft spot on the top of their heads that doesn't always close. Because of this, a bump on the head could kill a Chihuahua. Also, there are many lines of Chihuahuas, so make sure you buy from a highly reputable breeder. Otherwise, you could wind up with a sickly or snappish dog. |
