The Chesapeake Bay Retreiver is a sporting dog. Sporting dogs are active and alert and require daily exercise. Because they have superior instincts in the water and woods, sporting dogs are often used for hunting. If exercised and properly trained, most sporting dogs make excellent pets. However, some of these dogs like to bark and whine a lot, so they're not suited for apartment life. Developed around the icy bays of Maryland, this breed is great at retrieving ducks and geese, even in frigid icy water. The Chesapeake Bay is the most rugged retriever. It's sometimes aggressive with other dogs, and is suspicious of strangers. Like all retrievers, the Chesapeake Bay should be exercised daily. These dogs have webbed feet, so they love to swim.
