Border Collies are extremely energetic and fast. In general, they do best in the country with an owner who loves the outdoors. They love to chase cars, bikes, cats-anything that moves. Borders are skilled escape artists too. Keep them fenced in or on a leash when they are outdoors. They are usually suspicious of strangers, and aggressive with other pets. The Border Collie is a herding dog. Herding dogs were originally bred to control the movement of sheep and cattle. While some breeds still work the farmlands, others are used for search and rescue and narcotics detection. When kept as pets, these dogs often try to "herd" their owners by nipping at their heels. If properly trained and exercised daily, herders make excellent family companions. Height: 17"-21" Weight: 35 to 50 pounds Coat: Medium-length with longer hair on the chest, stomach, legs, and tail. Brush or comb twice a week. Ears prick up halfway; tail hangs down. Colors: Usually black and white, but sometimes gray and white or blue and white. Eyes are dark. Special Consideration: If you buy a Border Collie from a poor bloodline you might wind up with a dog that is difficult to train. Buy only from a reputable breeder. |
