Australian Cattle Dogs are bold and hardy and make excellent watch dogs. Because they need vigorous daily exercise, they do better in the country and in the city. They are protective with strangers and often aggressive with other animals. Most Australian Cattle Dogs love to bark. The Australian Cattle Dog is a herding dog. Herding dogs were originally bred to control the movement of sheep and cattle. While some breeds still work the farmlands, others are used for search and rescue, and narcotics detection. When kept as pets, these dogs often try to "herd" their owners by nipping at their owners' heels. If properly trained and exercised daily, herders make excellent family companions. Origin: Australia Height: 17" - 21" Weight: 35 - 50 pounds. Coat: Straight with a dense undercoat. Brush once a week. Tail hangs down; ears prick up. Colors: Usually blue-mottled with tan markings on the head, chest, and legs. Red-speckled is also acceptable. Puppies are born white. Eyes are dark brown; nose is black. Special Consideration: The Australian Cattle Dog's natural herding, strong potective and territorial instincts require that this breed is supervised withchildren. |
